About Us - Babanango Valley Environmental Adventures
BVEA was first opened in 1991 by Dr John and Meryn Turner. It has grown from strength to strength doubling its capacity in 2000 with the opening of Rock Pools Camp and eventually almost trebling the initial capacity with the opening of a third camp, Cottage Camp, in 2011. Babanango Valley can now accommodate as many as 260 guests. Unlike most school camps Babanango Valley has had a strong focus on outdoor learning rather than adventure which is often time consuming and limited in educational scope. The Turners were able to identify a lack of practical learning opportunities within the South African school curriculum and thus Babanango Valley Environmental Adventures became a solution to this very problem.
BVEA is situated in a special piece of KZN, the Babanango Valley. The 3 camps are situated on a 3000ha private nature reserve within the Babanango Valley which has Zebra, Wildebeest, Kudu, Impala and other small game making BV a very safe environment for outdoor education. The valley has a moderate climate with chilly evenings in the winter and long warm days in summer, the area receives very little rainfall thus making BV an ideal location for outdoor education. BVEA is situated in Battlefields country and there is a wealth of history in the area: Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, uMgungundlovu/Dingaanstad, Piet Retief’s Grave, Ondini, Spirit of emakhosini, Battle of Ulundi and many other venues.
Although John and Meryn are still actively involved in owning and running BV, Ryan Andraos and Nadia du Preez are the current managers and have been so for the last five years, so should you have any questions or queries please ask for Nadia and/or Ryan.
Ryan and Nadia are ably supported by a group of Camp Leaders and facilitators. Our Camp leaders and facilitators are as good as they come! They are well trained, professional, experienced and well qualified. All our facilitators are permanent employees; they have a vested interest and commitment to BV and go on a 10 day training course before they work with a single school or client.
